Fable 3 For Windows PC Reviews

Fable 3, an role-playing game, first appeared on Microsoft Xbox 360 console last year and this new PC version adds a challenge mode and updates visuals. The story is the same-with the player taking on the role of a young prince or princess who must overthrow their tyrannical brother then lead the kingdom of Albonian against a malevolent dark force. The main characters are the same your dog is the same, the quests are the same, and the game is still one of two district halves one: one dramatically more exciting than the other and one over almost before you know it.
Visually, the game looks slightly better than on the 360 but the graphics still have that slightly washed-out look to them-and combat is still as easy as it was in the 360 version. Also, you don't die, you just get knocked unconscious, reappearing back near where your body lay. Some of the side guests will be interesting (unless you've played the game on 360 already) but things get a little repetitive after a while.
For the most part, the control scheme of mouse and keyboard works well- I could have used a controller to review Fable 3 but I didn't, this is a PC game after all-but for the most part the controls work well, with the left mouse button used to pick up items and attack enemies. Things get a little cumbersome in the middle of battle, though having to use the mouse's scroll wheel to change stances (melee, range and magic) is a little cumbersome at times.
Ultimately though, a change of control scheme and slightly better graphics don't a masterpiece make, and Fable 3 on PC still suffers from the problems that plagued the Xbox 360 release, which can be summed up by what I said in my Xbox 360 review. "combat is not much more than a one-button affair: Want to hit that Hollow Man with your sword? Press X (or left mouse in the PC version). Want to hit him harder? hold down X (left mouse) then release". I found some of the "fetch-and-carry quests" repetitive and the game holds your hand a little too much sometimes. Also, the main quest is over before you know it.
Just like the Xbox 360 version, Fable 3 is an entertaining game that just doesn't reach the lofty heights of greatness- and the final battle against the malevolent dark force is just a disappointment.
